I have a spot in my tank that is basically all shadows that I want to put some kind of life in other than the aquatic plant I have growing up the rock. I figure only soft corals would work here, or sponges, which I’m open to but I’m not sure if it’s worth the risk of sponges. I hear they’re pretty toxic to other corals? It’s only a 29g tank so I’m not sure. But I don’t think I want gsp because I don’t want it to take over, and I already have Xenia. Thoughts?

If your tank is established and your on top on it, you could look into some easy nps’s like dendros or tubestrea. I have them, I find them very easy.

Look into Cyphastrea.

I would love brain coral. Would it work here?

Favia, Favites and Platygyra are the ones I know that are low -med light. I could be wrong.

How’s the flow in there and what light?

The flow is medium high, and the light is really just bouncing off other surfaces. The picture makes it look a lot lighter than it is. Think overhang-ish?

I have a side that's very shaded so I plan to populate it with various Cyphastrea, Leptos, and maybe a blast or two. All low light corals.

Or as mentioned there's some nps corals that'll work. I have a little dark cave in the middle of my tank that I'd like to place some dendros in.

My blasto is under an overhang, so it is pretty shadowed. It's doing well. Beautiful coral, too.

Careful with Cyphastrea, they seem to like really low light. I just happened to bleach mine.

Bleaching occurs from too much.

I mean, there are other causes for a coral to lose color, but usually "bleaching" or turning white is a result of too much light, and too little light usually results in browning out of the coral do to an increase in zooxanthellaewithin said coral.
