Just was wondering how much magnesium everyone roughly doses on a daily basis?

I have a 65gal mixed reef with a 35gal sump that's moderately stocked with softies, LPS and SPS.

Here are my readings:
Phos 0.01
Nitrate >10ppm
Calcium 450ppm
DKH 9
Magnesium 1250ppm

*Tested daily at the same time every day for 3 weeks with Elos test kits* Test kits are a new. Bought them for this specific reason

I use Brightwells Magnesion-P to raise my Magnesium.

I've been dosing roughly 10 grams per day(Ea gram of Magnesion-p will raise 1 US gallon by 114.4 ppm). I know that only roughly raises my MAG in my tank(roughly 65gals of water volume) by 17ppm. But I've gotten my MAG reading up to 1350 for two days by using 15-20 grams. But as soon as I lower it to 10 grams it will drop back to 1250ppm the day after.

My CA and DKH have remained stable at those readings for the past 3 weeks. I think I dosed CA once in the past three weeks as it dipped down to 400ppm. Weekly 10 gal water changes done with Instant Ocean salt and RODI water

I'm a little concerned as to how much MAG supplement I've been having to dose.

The directions on the Brightwells product states that a maximum rate of addition is (after I crunch the numbers) 1 gram per 20 gals of water. Which only allows me to dose 3-4 grams per day.

At that rate my MAG drops like a rock. I've seen it as low as 950ppm! So as I increased the amount I was able to get it up to 1250, fairly stable when I add 10 grams on a daily basis. But it looks like I need close to 15 grams per day to keep it a steady 1350.

By increasing to 10 grams I have not noticed any bad effects on any of my corals. I am just concerned about the large amount of MAG I have to dose just to maintain a stable 1250!

Any ideas? Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

I would go 3 days without dosing and then test and see what your loss is. Then divide that by 3 and see what your daily loss is. Then you will know how much you need to dose each day. Most companies are giving you dosages for the average tank. But if you have a large demand you have to increase to keep levels stable. My tank i have to add 20mls. of mag. a day. But i am also adding 55 mils. of calcium and alkalinty also to maintain levels. Anywhere between 1300- 1500 Mag. is fine.

The doseage by the company if safe, they don't want you over dosing the tank. But if your tank is using it, then dosing to get it up isn't an issue. You can get it up to 1400 or so, your fine by adding whats needed to get it there, then stabilize it again daily. Just don't try to raise it more than 100 in any given 24 hour period.

^Thanks guys. I'll try to get it above 1350 and go back on a maintenance dose.

But I'm still curious as to how much mag everyone goes through in your own systems. For comparison sake. Seems like mine is eating through mag like no tomorrow.
