I am new to the hobby (6 months). I have a 55g FOWLR and have no plans to for coral. I also am adverse to algae of any kind. (I know it is natural, guess I dont care)

My question is: is there any risk for aiming for zero phosphates and nitrates in an effort to keep the tank as clean as possible. Right now I am dosing homebrew NOPOX, running phosguard and a skimmer. Except for new tank diatoms, everything is clear and nutrients are currently holding at zero for now.

Also, can algae still grow in zero nutrient water?

Thanks.

I don’t think you would have an algae problem but you may create an environment for Dino’s

Hello Jim, i can tell Ya from experience Even if your test kits always read zero ,You can still have Algae ,lot's of it. Now I have another tank that consistently reads zero I have Bubble spreading but no HA . Every tank is different !

I guess I am not suprised.

Add Cynobacteria to possible nuisance algae with low nutrients.

If you skip the photoperiod, your plan might work.

Use Vibrant from UWC. Dose more frequently than it recommends, maybe once a week? Should help keep most algae at bay. You can also use fluconazole occasionally, or algae fix, or both. And keep on the nopox, and phosphate reducers.
