I remember how hard it was trying to get Nitrates and phosphates low...nowadays we have to dose due to being undetectable or too low.

What gives?

I’m saying! The diversity of coral we can keep now is astounding! I would never would hv dreamed of having a tank like I hv now. A small sacrifice I believe but yea I remember cycling and that was it.

I’ve been battling 0 nitrates and phosphates for over a month now after my sps began bleaching . It appears several of us are going through this now! Never had this issue with my other tank that didn’t have a refugium. Corals grew like crazy and all I done was checked my alk very week .
I turned my skimmer off last night, feeding more and lowering my alk down from 9 to 8 and added a lyretail so hopefully this combined effort will get my tank where it needs to be.

Have you had any luck raising nitrates? I had zero phosphates with a nitrates of around 10ppm so I have been dosing phosphates to get them up in doing this my nitrates are near non detectable, so now am looking to dose nitrates.

Hey,
Wow, this has been a tough one hasn’t it ! I really didn’t want to have to dose that since that is something I have no experience in!
I hope that helps get your tank back in shape .
Yes I have had success as of right now! I lowered my alk to 8 and staying steady . I also added 2 more fish not including the anthias addition in the past 2 weeks . I have fed pellets to my hermits as well since I usually just feed reef frenzy and mysis shrimp and turned skimmer off for 3 days . I also have a very small piece of cheato in sump compared to before and I just bought some sps to replace the ones I lost last month !
I will keep my fingers crossed and hopefully keep seeing algae grow on my glass !

My issue is only having a small tank 24 gallon, well more like 23 with no sump or skimmer, I only have 3 fish and I'm not looking to add another yet. The tank had been great up to about 9 months ago. The tank looked like this a year ago

Thwn I had zero phosphates, so had this

I have now got it back to this and sone polyps of the dead sps are regrowing.

I'm now trying to get better colours and plump ness on my lps as they are struggling a bit with low nitrates.

That’s looking much better !! Sps are tough anyway . I am not going to add many more sps to tank .

Nothing. You can still run a tank like you always have and it will be perfectly successful. Lower N and P are a current fad and likely blamed for other things like trying to go too fast, inferior lighting (this is getting rampant) among other things. I went from frags to this in about 5 months with .1 nitrate and 0-1 ppb of phosphate... this is documented in the contest thread in my signature. None of these corals are hard to grow (I chose them for this reason), but their growth has not been limited in any way by nearly undetectable N or P.
