Hi,

So PH in my tank is 7.8 because of co2 in home, i have tried airstone method opening up the windows and lid but it didnt help.

I am planning on using a powerhead with aeration, its like running an airline tube from outside window into the powerhead. I hope it will introduce fresh air in tank that may help raise ph.
Any ideas, what do u all suggest?

Link below shows the powerhead with aeration,

Thank you

I would say a co2 scurbber. But ur lime stone media is going get pricey. I just hooked one up and it turn the media purple less then 2 days. So I am kinda in same boat as u got find a new why.

Take the lid off of your tank and make sure you have lots of surface agitation. How are your tank inhabitants? If they're ok then your ok

7.8 is not that low. However are there people that smoke in the house? My ph runs between 8.1 and 8.4 no one smokes and the doors are closed. However when company comes for a few weeks ( they smoke but not in the house) my ph will drop to 7.75, but not when nonsmokers visit.

How do you know your pH is 7.8? Most test kits and probes are not perfect. Opening a window should have increased pH some. So if it didn't, it makes me think your testing method is not reliable.

Its a new tank cycling for 6 months. So no inhabitants yet.

Nobody smoke. But its at 7.8.

Its Api ph test. Actually what happened was, I took of the lid placed an airstone and opened window for some days and it still was at 7.8 but when I took water sample and aerate it outside the home, ph went upto 8.1-8.2.

What do you mean exactly when you say opening a window didn't help?

FWIW, I am skeptical that the effect relates to smoking.

Let's see if it is plausible...

Here's a site that calculates the CO2 production from an average person:

"700 grams of carbon dioxide a day "

That divides out into about 29 grams CO2 per hour, assuming totally even distribution through the day/night.

This site calculates the CO2 output from a single (typically about 1 g mass) cigarette:

"Totaling the additive ingredients of a cigarette, we have 0.44 g CO2e for the added carbon and an extremely conservative 0.18 g CO2e for all the other compounds. "

Thus burning a cigarette adds roughly 0.62 grams of CO2.

Conclusion?

For people visiting your home to produce more CO2 from cigarettes than breathing, they would need to smoke more than 29/0.62 = 47 cigarettes per hour. Unless you live in a cigar bar, this seems unlikely to me and thus I'm skeptical that smoking makes a substantial difference. Two nonsmokers will produce way more CO2 than a single heavy smoker.

They do not smoke in the house but they come twice a year and everytime my ph drops. Maybe their bodys are so deprived of oxygen their lungs grab all they can get.

Its like opening windows bring fresh air in and co2 out, that help in raising the ph by using airstone method, but it didnt work. Anyways I will do it again and check if it helps. Thanks to all of you guys.

I meant details like what pH, how long, etc.

But in general, if fresh air in the room didn’t raise pH to normal levels, then either aeration is inadequate, or the pH measurement.

Ph when I tested was 7.8 after aeration. Aerated for 5 days, with a small air stone. I have placed a bigger airstone now and I will measure ph at different times of day.

I drilled a hole in the exterior wall, and connected the skimmer air hose.
Never had a problem after
