Lower water level and no lid/top fish jumping

Regarding fish jumping, would lowering the water level be beneficial (or negligible?) if i decide not to have a screen top/lid? say i had a 16 inch tall tank, and only filled it to 12 inches, would those 4 inches be beneficial? im sure it would help a little, the question is how much. anyone have any experience with this?

for the record, im not lowering the water level for just this purpose, i just want to know if it would be an added benefit

I've seen a 3 inch fish jump over a foot out of my tank when I had the cover off for maintenance.

I’ve seen it happen also. They come out of the water like a torpedo!
