Last year I lost a lot of new hermit crabs right out of the bag when my power heads came back on.
I just had a revelation. There are little to no dead spots in my tank. New livestock are usually lethargic after their journey to Ks. I should probably shut off my power heads for 3 days when adding these tired creatures? Should this help retain and not murder new inhabitants?

Definitely do not turn your Powerheads off for 3 days. You should leave Powerheads on regardless of new inhabitants being added to the tank.

My main pump will still be pushing 3k gph, and I don't have any corals yet.

I think if you lost that many crabs, something happened in shipping or from the source. Theres no way the flow in your tank is high enough to cause crab death without other factors. At most, I would slow it down for an hour or so during acclimation but not 3 days, that will stress your other inhabitants.
