what the lowest tank temp you can run without harming fish and corals..woke up this morning and tank was 76...i turned heater up a little bit, gonna swing home at lunch and check things out......Is was Chilly hear in Baltimore this Morning

I normally run tank between 78-80

76 is fine, like stated above. However, be careful of big temp swings as it can have negative effects on both coral and fish.

my tank is normally on the 76-78 range throughout the day... you should be fine.... :)

76 is great, esp for aussie corals. Just don't want too much of a temp swing.

Yep, you'll be fine. As mentioned temp. swings are more harmful than a bit lower than usual, however a bit higher (depending on normal range) can do some damage. Checking at lunch would be a good thing. Make sure you didn't turn the heater up too much.

My tank runs between 68-70 F, and all my corals are fine... they like it better actually but they are "deepwater" ;)

76 on the ave. but during winter nights its gets 1-2 degrees lower as the heater is working to heat the tank back up/

give those fish a jacket. lol jk.

my tank does drop to 72 in the winter months when it is super cold no ill effectsl i think my acro colors get better in the winter with a tad colder water.

I have found that cold if far easier on them then Hot.

I had a 4 day power out and the only thing I lost
was a shrimp someone ate for a midnight snack.

For the most part our livestock it heartier than we think they are.

I try keeping my temp at 76.
When I use to have a basement I tried keeping the temp at 73 since it was possible with the coral air that a basement provides.
When I was able to keep the temp at 73 my SPS and zoas grew extremely fast...

I was under the impression that higher temps, i.e. 80-84 degrees, increased the metabolism of corals and fish. This would ultimately result in faster growth. Any feedback on this?

From what I have read higher temps such as in the 80 degree, fish tend to like it. But, I never really kept fish. The only fish that I keep are more of the clean up fish. For example, the tanks that I have are roughly 180 gallons and I keep 2-3 fish in each one.
Coral on the other hand, I have had better growth rates with lower temps. Of course this is my experience, I realize that every tank is its own eco-system. Therefore, I always expect different results from one tank to another.

Growth is typically going to be best at the average yearly temp, which for most of what we keep would fall around 82 degrees...

Also, people need to stop with this temp swings are bad nonsense. Yes, for many many years we in the hobby believed that to be true. However, there's nothing stable about an actual coral reef temperature wise. I've been playing around with temperature a lot over the last 5 years and have yet to find a single negative I can relate to temperature swings. In fact daily swings seem to better prepare corals for a large swing (10+ degrees) outside of a corals normal temperature range in the event of a problem.
