Hello,

I recently purchased a large colony of an LPS coral that I am unfamiliar with.

It is a branching species with each branch about the size of a nickel and when the polyps are extended they're about the size of a quarter.

Thanks!

Hammer coral and member of the euphyllia family

It is paraancora - hammer coral and again member of Euphyllia family

I wasn't aware hammer corals came in this form. I have several with the size and shape polyps but this one has much smaller polyps and the tentacles don't have the hammer shape. They're almost like mini plate corals

Here's a another photo that's a little clearer. For scale, that sexy shrimp is about 1-1.5 cm long.

I vote euphyllia cristata.

Are There small "plates" of skeleton between the tentacles like this?

I could be wrong... My cristata does not have the defined"mouth" that yours has

Yes there are. He sold it to me as frogspawn which it definitely is not but he did mention the colony is about 8 years old, if that helps.

After looking at a bunch of photos, it does look most like cristata. The colony is about the size of a volleyball and I had to cram it in my 20 gallon invert QT. Once I get it into the DT I should be able to get some better photos when it really opens up.

Thanks everyone!
