LR in Biocube Rear Chamber = Nitrates?

um no ive never heard that. from my experience the more live rock the better. Just as long as your not blocking up the flow which shouldnt be a problem with a little rubble. i have a 29 biocube and all i run in the back is a octopus nano skimmer, carbon, and cheato. actually now that you mention it i would like to try this instead of the old artificial sponge filter i used to have but clogged up the flow really fast.

I had a 8g biocube and I placed LR rubble in the back and had zero issues. That tank ran for about 1 yr. But I also did my weekly water changes and stayed on top of it. My live rock rubble was a mixture of different sizes but most around the size of golf ball, maybe smaller.
As long as you keep them clean, if not the detritus will settle and will indeed lead to nitrates.
This is exactly my experience....Keep those back chambers clean!

There isn't a need for live rock in the rear chamber if u have enough in your main display of course. First chamber ran filter floss, 2nd chamber was just a bunch of chaeto lit up. 3rd chamber was carbon and chemipure/gfo. Changed water weekly n never had any problems. I then tried 1st chamber chaeto, 2nd skimmer, 3rd carbon/chemipure and was still the same....grew lps/sps successfully and eventually upgraded to 72 gallon bow front....miss my bio 29...was rimless running leds. Looked super clean.

Actually with or without the back chamber and with or without lr and with or without bio balls and so on, if you have enough nitrAte consumers like chaetomorphia, nitrates (and phosphates for that matter) can be unmeasureable.
the concern is that crud will break down in the chamber creating more aerobic bacteria action and increasing nitrates. But if you balance out the tank so what? LOL Just more nitrates for the macros to feed off of. :wink:
