Lrs reef frenzy

I would would just not scrub the back of your tank, and wait a tad longer to do your water changes until algae population picks up. A lot of people think algae is some terrible thing, but its all just in the cycle of life :) lemme see if i can find the article i read about that awhile ago. does your sand ever get that brown algae on it? They love that!

Yes, some algae is a cycle that you go through, but there are a lot of algae that will choke out and damage or kill your coral.

Does it ever? Lol our tank is still going through the uglies. I don't want an algae free tank. Pristine white sand is not my goal.

If our gsp or hammer starts looking bad, I promise to re-home them. I don't want anything to suffer.

All due respect, I feel "new" reefers should be wary of giving advice based solely on opinion with no grounds of the science behind it.

While algae isn't the anti christ, like @jmann124 mentioned above, it can and will over run our tanks. Be it a 12g or a 1200g, the dilution factor is no where near that of the ocean, and letting water changes slide to increase algae population can be detrimental advice to a new reefer.

@Katrina71 , there are many supplements available to make sure your blenny has his veggies. Nori, seaveggies, and spirula (spelling) flakes just for starters.

In my opinion, I would definitely not look to increase algae population at all. And would keep on my water changes. If you let it get ahead of you, you'll pull your hair out trying to catch up.

Another point to consider, for what it's worth.

You can click on a user's name and browse all their posts, including started threads and posts on threads contributed to, you can use this as a "background check" to see if you can rely on the advice from a given source.

Some folks should definitely do more reasearch themselves, rather than give, at best, suspect advice to a new reefer.

Folks new to the hobby are like sponges, ready to soak up what you throw at them. Be it good or bad.

I'm a little frustrated. Lfs says what we have is fine, while others say no. So confused! Our algae is mild and the corals are growing and look great. The little Tailspot blenny is out swimming and eating. I appreciate you trying to reassure me this is going to be ok. I sure hope so.

The most important thing to remember in the hobby, my opinion of course, it's that your tank and it's inhabitants will tell you when something is wrong.

From fish looking skinny and acting abnormal, to corals not opening up as usual. Continue to move forward slowly, research new additions and observe them routinely. If it looks out of the norm, ask questions and weigh the answers carefully.

Remember, that most stores really try their best with customers, and some just try for the money. This forum is an ever growing reefers bible, your answers are here.

They grew a hammer colony to at least 30 heads in a stock biocube before they fragged it.

I'm a big fan of this shop, I enjoy dealing with Jake and Trey. I like dealing with the girl that works there to, though I can never remember her name lol.

So it's probably good info from them? She (you aren't the only one) has a pic smaller than ours and actually it's a frag of her hammer from that tank that I bought.

If you go to the Larry's Reef Services page, you can find a dealer locator map that Larry keeps well updated.

PS, every shop that I've found via Larry's site has been worth the trip.

Can anyone tell me who carries coralife 10,000 18 watt straight pin actinic bulbs in Knoxville? Yes it's out. Not sure how this will impact our tank. Kinda worried. Bulbs are the one thing we don't have a backup for yet. I know...rookie move.

last time I was in the aquarium on papermill they had a decent selection of tubes.. don't get in there too often as there hours are basically the same hours I work.. stopped in to JKS the other day.. very nice set up.. loved the kessils..

LRS is amazing, been feeding it alongside PE mysis for roughly 2-3 years. LRS now has nori, which I just picked some up, as I was out of my previous brand. My fish are fat and healthy, so you can have fat and healthy fish with just these 3 foods. They would probably be just fine with LRS, but I like fat blennies lol. Jake usually carries it at AM. I'm probably a little late to the party with this response, lol.

Thanks guys! Never too late to the party. I appreciate the warning to be careful of advice.

We carry it as well.
You guys have an amazing store! You were so nice to not laugh in my face because I had no idea mushrooms could move. Coral 101 was worth the drive. BTW everything you told me I did. All of our corals look amazing. My son said I better get good at this...he wants a jellyfish.
