24" center to center, max, but you can certainly go shorter.

4 lights with 24" between each will span 6 feet. That would be plenty for an 8-foot tank.

And a LSM will only control one string correct?

Yes, one string per LSM. Unless the unit can handle wiring in more LEDs, which I don't know if you can. Might not be rated for more power output than the mag LEDs they manufacture. Also, it would likely void the warranty...
