LTA shriveled tips

I've had this guy for a few weeks. Was looking good yesterday but today he moved to the glass and the side that touches the glass, the tips look shriveled and almost dead. Anyone seen this?

I can't tell from pics, but how deep is your sand bed. My lta is buried between rock and sand of about 3".
