Not necessary, certainly, but done right it mimics the moon quite well. Anyone who's ever gone on a night dive on the reef will vouch for the moon as a considerable light source (even if it's just reflecting). Plus it looks really cool.

Night dive is true - Mother Nature provided an incredible light while night diving a reef. Open water night dive is a bit more, well, sinister and deep spacey. Shallower night dives, well, is a whole different world for sure :)

An open water night dive sounds like a horror movie lol.
 
i have my 2 AP700 running the lunar lights. i like the look of it. my par meter registers zero when they are in lunar phase so im not sure what the corals would detect.
