Lux meters to check Led????

I think it answers a lot myself.

Well, it answers a lot (A LOT).

But what kind of environment (relatively speaking) is Kailua-Kona for corals?

What does that curve look like on an overcast day?

What does that range of samples look like from Palau? Jakarta? Bahamas? :)

Took me a while to find light data I gathered while diving off Kailua-Kona coast. Probably raises more questions than it answers...

I've been in this hobby for close to 20 years. Back in the day we used 400 watt MH augmented with 110 watt VHO. The results were great but the heat and electricity was an added cost and complication.

That said, I have yet to see a mature SPS tank with what one might call moderate lighting...Less than a 250 watt MH Equivalent... The Ecotech Radion is roughly a 250 watt MH Replacement. If you are looking for a 400 watt MH LED replacement please check us out.

Most corals in nature are between 20 and 60 feet..Some Deeper... The Hawaii chart shows 700 PAR at 30 feet. Photohinibition is between 350 and 550 PAR depending on species. For SPS PAR above this results in desirable pigments to reflect the excessive light. Go deeper and there is less need for these pigments, coral are very adaptable to different intensities.

Over the last couple of years I've noticed a trend in using weak LED lights...Hardcore T5 users still have good results with 6 to 8 T5s over a tank less than 24" deep.

Personally I like to see at least 200 PAR on the sand bed...Sanjay recommends a minimum of 100 with higher light corals closer to the top. My Red Carpet Anemone enjoys 270 PAR on a 30" Deep Tank, Clams are happy as well.

One must consider the future and as a coral grows...Especially SPS as they tend to shade our lights. Having more allows the extra light to be reflected thus providing light to remote shaded areas as in their natural environment.

I've used both PAR Meters and Lux Meters and have found both valuable when changing lights... Generally but not specifically a Lux Meter will have close to a linear relationship to a PAR Meter if you are concerned about burning corals. The errors in meters are generally 10% but can be as high as 20% so dial back and acclimate slowly.

Just some food for thought.

Yes but the proof is a mature tank...5-10 years...

Anyone can grow a frag into a baseball but can they grow that baseball into a basketball size coral???

I've donated a few Salt Bucket Sized Euphyllia to the Shedd using strong lights...Yes along with lights it did help growth that I fed the fish there...

Flow and Water Parameters are more critical at this level...Along with Intense Lighting.

The sad thing about this is I cannot replace the Gigas Clam but I can go to Thailand and have it in soup. A RO RO Top Off issue caused it to become a fresh water tank while I was on a Scuba Diving Vacation... Lesson Learned...

Just needed corals like those to make a nice pic out of the demo. (I have discount corals...popular back in the 1990's – my feeling is that nobody cares how you grow them one way or the other. I like em, but I guess I'm old. :D)

Gah, no! At least you got to go scuba diving out of it.....all I got was sleep in my eye...

One of my biggest colonies (Shedd-worthy, > dinner-plate size) was recently lost to what seemed like a routine early-morning power outage, while I slept nearby. :mad:

Not an everyday thing, but far from unheard of (I've lost some major appliances over the years and have since put everything on surge suppressors) and yet this is the first impact to the reef from a power outage in all this time.

(Yes I have the extension cords and inverter....can't use em while sleeping though....plus 99.9% of the time the power comes on while I'm getting it set up so I really don't hurry anymore.)

It's a trendy hobby. A few years back a tri colour acan head was going for over $100. Named Zoas and Tyree Named Corals had a market place...Even a monti that had the public for a sort but expensive time.

I like to look at things as not what is popular at any given time, but what pleases me when I return from a long day at work... I love the flow of the anomemes and the softies... The pic does not do this tank justice but a worthy note is that the Red carpet is happy over 5 years... Hosting 8 clowns and the PAR is 280 on the sand bed using 7 Sirius XTC LED Fixtures. The tank size is 120"x36"x30"...

Thanks! I should note that these measurements were made at noon, give or take a few minutes. Getting them required some effort (other than the normal routine of preparing for a dive and testing) since clouds roll off Hualalai volcano towards the ocean at almost the same time every day (usually around noon as luck would have it.) As you probably know, Kona is noted for its exceptionally clear water, with vis often at 100 feet or more (me, being a coral nerd, would say the water is classified as a Jerlov Ocean Type I.) Many reefs are growing in waters with considerably less light penetration. I have data from a dive at noon on a cloudy day. What did I do with that file???
 
Would somebody please tell me what kind of Lux Meters are on the market so I can check my tanks Hydra 26 lights??

I have 4 Hydra 26hd's over my 125g (72×24×18) and I'm going to get me a 220g or larger tank by the end of the month and I'm burning up corals..acro's that is.. I need to check the lux measurements.

I have read all about PAR reading ect. Ect. Ect. And now after all the reading people are saying that Lux measurements are more important than just plan PAR and Amazon has a huge selection from cheap to expensive and I think it best is I can get some advice about the devices that people own that are actually proven to work. Thank you for the help.

From danas graphs it seems that anywhere from 250 to 700 par is what most corals would get in clear water. (In 30 feet)

So in slightly dirtier water you might find the values between 125 and 350 par? Seems to be the sweet spot for most hobbiests.

I've measured PAR only in some of the clearest waters in the world (off the Kona coast, west side of the Big Island of Hawaii.) So, yes, you are correct. Many are found in waters that aren't that clear. In the Kona waters, many corals are found in the shallows, but grow only in shaded areas, or fair poorly if they are exposed. I think PAR values of 100 to 300 micromole/m2/sec are sufficient for the majority of corals.

Thanks. It seems that ATI T5 lighting approximates these numbers no? Perhaps this is why most t5 users have easy success? I cant seem to get my china blacl box led to grow anything. Its a dimmable blue/white 165 watt with 55 led. I Kind of want to switch to T5s.
 
Many you've mentioned it - but if you give me some numbers on your black box, I might have some suggestions. Need height above water level. tank depth, how many channels and if blue is on one channel and the rest on another, types of corals, and anything else you might feel important.

I actually think it's because you pretty much are forced to set it and forget it (no dimmer , no spectrum choices) , and most corals will adapt to to more light than less with poor spectrum.

Calculate the peak par on an 8 tube ati t5 at 12 in. Pretty much NOBODY will set an led that high of you tell them what that number is.

The vintage 30g oceanic cube I have , it was reccomded to have a 150 MH, most were run 12in or less over the cube. Calculate that par! :eek:

IMHO

Dirty aka Unclear Water can be nutrient deficient as in sand/silt or nutrient rich as in river or coastal development runoff. Unclear nutrient rich water in our captive reefs is a recipe for nuisance algae that more often than not may not be kept at bay with cleanup critters or a huge skimmer. Strong lighting will only make this worse.

Some of the waters of the Kona Coast offer a huge amount of clean nutrients to corals from micro organisms. Sadly its very difficult to recreate this environment in our homes... The Monterey Bay Aquarium (one of the best in the world) has the luxury to feed its corals this nutrient rich (loaded with zooplankton) water to its corals with little algae promoting nutrients... Note that both Monterey and Kona have a lot of very deep water and currents....

For my Personal Reef, I know that I cannot provide this abundance to my corals so I choose a very clean water with a lighting intensity that has worked in the past... 400 watt MH Equivalent or 200+ PAR on the sand bed.

A lot of very popular LEDs only offer 100 PAR on the sand bed at best.

Yes others have seen growth with less but corals are very adaptable and if the light is not strong enough they rely on feeding.

For those of you that will accept a poor or adequate spectrum, know that most Chinese Imports have a variable spectrum. One box will provide plenty of the needed 420-460nm another will be very weak in the 410-430nm... Others will have a lot in the > than 500nm which nuisance algae use. They simply do not bin their LEDs...

T5 lighting is good but the Peak PAR on an 8 tube ATI after 6-9 months drops quicker than Harvey Weinstein's pants during a hollywood leading lady casting.... Everytime corals are subjected to change its added stress, especially with lights...
