Hello,

Had a hippo tang for about 3 months and just noticed he has white spots and lesion. Any help with a diagnosis would be appreciated.

Warmest regards,

Gasper

I do see a small spot forming on its tail. I will try an get better photo tomorrow.....

Lymphocystis can also be seen on the body - how is the fish doing otherwise (eating, breathing, etc)? *Picture from the University of FL

Fish seems to be acting normally. I did notice the gem tang chasing him.

Have you tested water parameters? Tangs are sensitive to extremes parameters in my experience. Also, blue hippos have always been the most susceptible to infection out of all tangs I’ve kept but also been the strongest I gaining immunity to infections. Any fighting between tank mates? Where does it like to hide & sleep? Hippos also tend to squeeze into the tightest spots in the rock structure & tend to injure them selves. Just a few things I think are good to ask & deduct out of the list of possibilities.

He definitely squeezes in the rocks. I noticed the other day my gem tang chasing him. Hippo was one of my first fish 4 months ago along with fox face, watchman gobe, 2 blue jaw trigger, 5 damsels, melnaurus wrasse, 2 clowns and six line wrasse. The gem tang is the only new fish that put in the tank. 3 weeks ago. Quarantined the gem for 3 weeks with copper power at 2.0 ppm.

Ok. Take this with a grain of salt but after reading the gem chasing the hippo & looking at the pics again, I see things with a different eye & will say that maybe those are cuts or injuries caused by the gem. That little surgical weapon tangs have on their tail is literally like a surgical knife & the times I’ve seen these guys go at it, they leave some nasty cuts on their target. looking over the pics again they look like horizontal wounds/cuts, again I could be wrong but that’s what I’m seeing now. Of all tangs I’ve kept zebras are the most aggressive even if introduced at the end. Extremely aggressive with their food. Also in my experience, hippos have a voracious appetite & can see both those fish bumping elbows when it comes to feeding time. Hippo is way too fast & the speed will frustrate the gem but zebras are relentless, once they lock on their target they see nothing but red. The hippo looks excellent, well fed & plump so I would lean towards discounting disease from the list. Also in my experience hippos are very playful & some other fish might not like their playfulness. I had a pair that would constantly play tag with each other, I couldn’t understand what they were doing at the beginning & thought they were fighting until I sat in front of the tank for several days & several hours to watch exactly what was going on & the two were just playing tag, it was a trip seeing the behavior.
