So I purchased a nice male Lyretail a few years ago and last night before the lights turned down I noticed some heavy breathing and he was laying on the sand. No previous signs of distress and all other fish are fine. So this got me wondering about overall age and lifespan. This fish was purchased as a male and keep'd in a 90 gal mix reef with no other Anthias. I would say I have owned him for more that 3 years. Anyone have any insight or experience with male anthias lifespan. I understand all a born female.
Currently he's not visible and I assume he's dead or dying in the rock work.

I believe anthias can live 5-10 years in aquariums. There's no telling how old it was when it was first captured either. Hoping the little guy is just hiding, it sucks to lose a fish after having it that long!

I've found squammipinnis lifespans average around 5yrs, some a little longer, some a little less. Since you got yours already as a male, this time frame isn't alarming.
