Are there any other effects to using muratic acid to lower Alk? being applied in a water change bin, is it safe to use right away?

It can drop the PH pretty good, so aerate it well, and wait til it comes back up before using.

Will do and thanks. We're talking 25 gallons in a 225 gallon tank, so I don't think the ALK would bother me too much anyway but Ive been wanting to try this approach rather than looking for a specific salt mix with an appropriate alk level.

Yea, I do it all the time in my 55g drum mix, using it for the 240g water change, when I do them. Pretty easy and straight forward, I keep a powerhead in the drum for mixing and aerating.

No intent to derail your thread here..... but what formula do you use to lower the alk? Example ?ma lowers alk ?dkh per 10 gallons?

No worries, more questions and info the better if you ask me. Anything you can add to the thread, please do.

As an example I added 8ml MA to 25 gallons and it brought the alk down a little over 2 DKH. The rule is 1/11000th of the water volume will lower your alk 2.8 dkh.
