I posted this question in another forum and didn't really get much answers at all. The wife and I are going to macna for the first time this year. We will be leaving Vegas Monday back to Boston and we are a little confused as to how livestock or coral gets shipped back. Last day of MACNA is Sunday and shipping companies are usually closed. So if we buy a fish or some coral how would we go about sending them back?

As I understand it you are able to bring livestock as a carryon item. Never done it personally however lots of talk recently due to Reef a Palooza.

InappropriateReefer on you tube also documented his trip through security leaving Fla with fish and frags.

thanks ill watch that right now

Yes, carry-on. Live aquaria trumps the 3 oz rule. Have to be in a clear container so they can see everything. May pull you aside to get supervisor approval.

Most airlines allow small foam coolers even though they really don't fit under a seat.

thanks guys. i am from Braintree but just bought a house with the wife in halifax

Congrats on the new place... Hopefully you shopped with your dream tank in mind! If you ever get into an emergency tank situation feel free to shout this way for help.

Thank you ... same goes for over here

A few great tips to troll this older thread (I know, napping)

  • When you pick out your goodies, make sure the vendors pack them with water, let them know what day are you flying back so they can give you plenty.
  • Often many are happy to give you clean water in bags at the end of the show before they are breaking down, this is great to have for an emergency water change.
  • Bring heat packs with you when you travel, and a cooler to store your livestock in for overnight coziness while you are out and about having fun.
  • You can travel with your livestock two ways, either check them through to your destination, in which case you just want to pack them well with heat packs as the luggage areas of planes gets very cold, or carry them on in a clear container. TSA does allow for livestock to travel in more than 3 oz of water, but they have to see it, so clear container is a must, as well as a being nice and smiling to the TSA officer.
