With MACNA being in DC this year and me living near by I was thinking about going to it but wanted to know if it was fun for an average reefer to go to? Or is it geared more towards the reef junkies? Thanks!!

It's awesome. I always wanted to go and finally got the chance in 2010 when it was in Orlando (my home town). If you can get there easily, I think it's a don't miss it event!

Yes, it's awesome. It's more than just the coral/aquarium stuff. You meet a lot of cool people and get to party with them each night. Even if I wasn't in the hobby it would be a great time!

I went last year since Denver is my hometown (more or less) and between than and going to ReefStock last month I am starting to make plans to fly to DC. So completely worth it for anyone on any level of the hobby. If you go in an "average" hobbyist you may walk away a "reef junkie" anyway.

So can you also buy corals from vendors that are there?

Of course. Thats one of the main things to do there. Most of them are very good about packing them with small amounts of water and from what I hear TSA is usually pretty cool about it. If its in your hometown tho its a good time to stock a tank

Hmmm I may be going lol

Yes, but don't miss the speakers or the banquet! At our banquet they put up a slide of the first pair of Lightning Clowns which had just been caught off PNG. It was great to hear the whole crowd audibly gasp when the slide appeared.

That's good to know! If I end up going, I will make sure to go to it all.

Agree 100% the talks are so entertaining and full of information. Just talking to people at the conference in general you pick up so many random bits of information. For me that lead to me doing a lot of research I wouldn't have otherwise done. There is a tangable difference in my tank pre and post MACNA simply because my knowledge base is so much greater.

I'm a pretty average reefer and with MACNA being so close (less than 4 hour drive from me), I couldn't imagine missing it. I asked my brother, as his best man, if he would move his wedding a few weeks later so I wouldn't have to miss MACNA. All the best coral vendor in the country set up booths and sell frags and there are speakers from all over the world that come in. Check out the list for this year, not something to be missed in my opinion.

Is this really a question? lol

It is THE event. Go. Buy an all access pass, do the reception, don't miss the banquet, and sit in on ALL the speakers you can.

I agree 100%. You really need to do the whole event. Even if you are close by, I would still stay in the hotel. Talking with other reefers from around the country while kicking back in the pool at 1am is the best. New friendships, lots of knowledge exchange, and plenty to see and do. MACNA is a great experience no matter what your reefing experience is.
