I just installed my newly built sump, and was thinking of using some macro algae to assist with filtration, and also as a snack for my livestock from time to time. I would like to try and use a light I have available if possible which is a 12 inch t8 fixture with an actinic bulb. Will this bulb work for growing algae, or do I need something that is more full spectrum and what would you suggest for the bulb? Also what types of macro algae could I grow with this fixture if any at all? Otherwise I will be using the space for a UAS.

A simple led 6500k bulb works great. Low energy, heat, and just like sunlight

The thing is, I currently dont have the money to upgrade my fuge light so I wanted to start out with the fixture I have right now and in the future I will be upgrading to incorporate more types of macro algaes.

I had an LED light on my chaeto. Now I use a 6500K CFL bulb and a shop light. My algae grow ten times more.

To answer your original question, the fixture is fine but that bulb is not ideal. Ideally you should pick up something more in the 6500K range...
