I’ve setup a 180gallon tank the cycle has completed, and I’m now ready for addition of my first fishes. I want to decorate my tank with some macro algae specifically,
1. Shaving bush plant
2. Halimeda
3. Maiden’s hair
Is it a good idea I’m anyway going to add a Chaeto to my refugium. Only concern I don’t want a caulerpa or any of its species in my tank as I’m not experienced and am pretty scared of it going sexual lol. Also As far I’ve researched I’ve come to know that iodine and calcium dosing is required, is it harmful for my fishes and cuc. Please share your experience. Thank you.[emoji3]

Unfortunately my experience with algae in the dt endd badly as my urchin decided it was fun to take it all and rip it to shreds. So, only advise, do not get a halloween urchin in the system. :)

Those are great macro algae. I would not think you would need the caulerpa. Even the cheato may not be needed.

Dosing is probably needed with a 180g if you have no calcium reactor and do not want to do water changes often. The halimeda will take calcium and the others do like some good minerals in the water.

Thank you so much Deniseandy. I’ll keep the urchin thing in mind.
Only concern now seeing your urchin problem is that I’m keeping tangs in my tank, and I read tangs eat macros, so is there a chance that they’ll shred the algae?

Possible, but so are many things with fish in captivity. Our known herbivores become omnivores in captivity. So, may, may not. Maybe feed a bunch of nori on the far side of the tank from the macro and hope they go for that and ignore you putting in the macro. :)

I have hypnea pannosa, cladophora prolifera, red dictyota, and chaeto in my 20L reef. I dose iron a few times a week but even before I did that things looked alright.

Where are you located? I'm giving away some cladophora prolifera (from the Caribbean, looks like short maiden's hair) if you are local.

I only have a HOB filter on my tank and 1 fish, but I always overfeed my tank. The macros seem to take care it, I have undetectable nitrate and phosphate.

Thanks squared for the offer but I’m from India [emoji1]. Marine livestock is not easily accessible to landlocked areas, the market is only thriving in coastal areas particularly in southern India. Lol sometimes I envy you guys having so readily available market for the same[emoji23].
