Macro algae smell

Have you guys noticed the smell of different types of macro algae? For example, I have some in my tank and was cleaning out the excess red dictoya. (I know some people say it’s a horrible invasive pest but I quite like it.) I noticed each time that when taken out of the water it has a distinct smell. (I think I’m a bit sensitive to it as I can smell it in my nostrils for awhile after.) I also remember Chaeto had a distinct smell out of the water too.

The smells not like...putrid rotting smell that you get when stuff is dying on it..this is hard to describe almost like a slight chemical smell. The closest I can liken it to is when I am oil painting with the “odorless” solvents. I don’t know if that helped or made people more confused hehe.

I’m not crazy right? Macro Algae has a smell right?

Quite honestly, Ive never smelt any personally.

Oh, I do have some GHA currently. (Had to increase nutrients to combat Dino’s ). When I looked it up I saw someone describing this smell as “bitter” and I think that’s what I’m smelling. Glad I got to the bottom, of that!

To me they smell like seaweed. I used to live in the Philippines and we would forage seaweed to eat all the time. That fresh oceany salty smell especially when you cut them. Just like cutting your lawn, you got that fresh grass cut smell.

Love the smell of a well working fuge! Grew up on the ocean, RI and smells like a good tidepool or cove or tidal area with lots of macro and inverts and the rest. Smells clean to me when working well.

But seriously, I've never noticed any smell at all, & neither could my daughter.

But some seaweeds can really pong when they become desiccated on the seashore.
