Macro and Pods without sump?

I've got a small 35g with a HOB Tunze protien skimmer. I wanted to add some macro algae and pods to my tank but I'm wondering if the pods would all be sucked into my protien skimmer. Would it be pointless to add them with a HOB skimmer in my tank?
