Hi there

Was planning to turn my 40g chaeto fuge (section of a 125 g sump) into a planted macro display, but wanted to know peoples thoughts on substrate to use

I had a bag of seaflor special grade and a bag of Fiji pink left over from my display build, but just found out my FIL dumped them in my kids sandpit because he’s blind as a bat.

So, since I need to buy new anyway, I’m open to suggestions.

Here’s the section in question- thinking maybe 3-4” deep, but I’d like to add a ‘hanging planter’ for some mangroves near the top. What substrate for main section, abd what do people recommend for mangroves?

I like using seachem matrix (I use that and have a brightwell N03 bioplate buried in it) as it provides aerobic and anaerobic areas for bacteria and makes a great home for pods.

Thanks.

Was thinking more along the lines of best for anchoring macro in the sand, or nutritional content, like mud.

I have the biofiltration and pod parts worked out and this would be more geared towards the health of the macro

Oh then I would rubber band some macro to rock rubble or use sand if you get something like turtle grass. I personally like putting mangroves into some sort of crevice where their roots can expand.

I have 4 inches of aragonite in my fuge. If you want the calcarious macros then they will need it from what I hear.
