I have a Nikon P900, mostly because I am not that into cameras enough to own a DSLR. My camera does great shooting something really far away, I can zoom in to crazy extremes and get a great shot with something I cannot see with my own eyes. What this camera does not do so well is shoot macro shots. I remember 14 years ago my Nikon had a set of three screw in lenses I could put on that would let me get close up tank shots. Would they make something like that for this camera or is there something better these days? I see people mention things like Raynox lenses and maybe Tamron was another one? I really think this camera can do really good macros once I have everything I need and get used to the settings, I just need a good set of macro lenses to get there. So can someone recommend a good macro lens? I get confused when they start throwing in numbers like focal length, mm sizes and such.

My wife and I are avid amateur photographers. We have 2 Nikon P900's, 2 Olympus TG cameras for snorkeling (well I just killed mine with an open door in the water) and a GoPro (mostly for video from my car at auto-x events).

We use the P900's a lot. On a 4 day photo tour in Moab, Utah we took over 11,000 images!

I have never seen any thing to help with macro shooting for the P900. I think part of the issue is that camera was really designed to be a big zoom telephoto camera. And the size of the screw in filter is 67mm which would be a big macro lens.

My wife does some macro with hers. She sets it on auto and then hits the 'flower' button on the back of the camera at the bottom. You can get pretty darn close that way. Or in the 'P' Program setting, and then hit the flower and choose 'MF' in the screen and you can manual focus as well.

Good luck. BTW, it's nice to find another Nikon P900 user!

To those who don't know the camera, here is a sample of what it can do without changing a lens or moving from one spot.

See the sign on the bridge? Maybe kinda?

Now you can see the sign... but wait...

This is at 2000mm telephoto. And the camera can be bought used for around $400+

Here is the full range all in one print.

See the extremely small black dot near the bottom of the Sun? That's Mercury as it passed in front last November. I did use a solar filter I made for shooting the total eclipse a couple years ago.

This isn't a super close up. But it shows it can get close. This is a calamondin fruit (about the size of a quarter).

Yeah man, the p900 has insane zoom. I cannot imagine what the next one will be. With every iteration of that camera they up the zoom amount.

It's already out there. Nikon P1000. It has a 24 to 3000mm zoom. Unfortunately it's bigger and heavier than the P900 and costs about 50% more. We do a lot of sports and nature photography and I only get out to the 2000mm on occasion. At 3000mm there is almost no chance you could hand hold it.

The pro photographer with a 1000mm lens couldn't get this shot without cropping. And even I was stabilizing the camera on the railing of the starters stand!

Wow. I am impressed but honestly I take such few pictures I rarely upgrade my camera, I would rather spend the money on my tank :)

I hear ya. I'm into my tanks, snorkeling, photography and driving (I raced SCCA sports cars for almost 20 years and still do auto-cross).

We just got back from s 4 day snorkeling trip in the Florida Keys. Between my wife and I we are allowed 20 animals each per day (160 total). I maxed us out with a lot of snails, a few stars, some zoas, a few crabs and a few odds and ends. So I went to Live Aquaria and calculated the value of our collection at their retail prices. I have to admit, I was shocked when I totaled it up. It was just north of $500 being very conservative.

How is the quality of the zoas?

I did get the lense filter kit, three lenses. Definitely better but not what it should be. I may end up getting a different camera long term. Not right now though, a nice camera is not in the budget.
