Sweet!! Are the refurbished pretty dependable? I would also like to get something in the 200 range. If I went that way I could have both for not much more than a new one.

Something a little longer I would highly recommend the Sigma 180mm Macro, It is a very good lens for the money. I couldn't find them on BH website but ebay has then for 350-500. I vote the 100mm L, IMO nothing beats it except the 180L which is just out of your price point.

Nothing compares to the 180L, the 100L comes close. They are both hands down the two best you can get though.

sigma 105 for me. on a nikon body though dx.

Anyone have recommendations for a poor guy with a mirrorless Sony A3000? Takes half decent shots (of anything but corals) but I'm still using the stock lens so it's not great for the tank! (My phone works better!) Thanks in advance and sorry for the quick highjack. :)

this is a fish shot using the sigma 105. no flash hand held and the pic has gone through Facebook compression then saved to iPhoto and then posted here....so its not as crisp as the original.....i will say though, that chopsie's shot of that scolly is superb!!!

According to reviews the sigma 105 is the lens to go for
The reviews I have read say the canon L is the better. I will read some more just to be sure. I am to the point I may rent both and see for myself. I know the side by side comparison I have saw the canon L definitely has a sharper image. Im sure I of all people could never tell the difference with my photos. LOL I know the glass is what makes the good pictures not the body.

you can only get as close as your glass so I wouldn't go with less than a 90 or 100mm. I have a Sigma 150mm 2.8 on my Nikon D300 and love it. only down side is it's big and heavy so a tri-pod or mono-pod is almost a must.

I am going with the canon 100L or 105 sigma to start. I really want something around 180 or 200 also but with the tank build going I gotta watch my spending. Thanks again guys for all the help. Hopefully I will be sharing some nice photos soon!!

Just a heads up, if you're going to consider the Sigma, you might want to throw the Tokina 100mm 2.8 in as well. Check out the review of the Canon 100mm L vs the Tokina. The Tokina beats the Sigma, loses to the Canon.

Check your lens/body combo on DXo mark as well. The link I have compares the Tokina, Nikon and Sigma.

Tokina is very affordable at the price point. Its new for $400. You could save that money and put it towards more corals. You'd be gaining from going to the Canon but is that marginal gain worth it or not is up to you.

*I forgot to induce this lens originally when I listed the lenses. I forgot it comes in the Canon mount as well.

Thanks I will look into that one also.

I have the Tamron 90mm, Sigma 180mm and a TC 1.4
The sig gets used for fish pics quite often as you can sit further back from the tank and they are a little less spooked.
The TC is great on the 90mm it allows you to get that little bit more magnification to, I used the TC and 90mm for this pic
