Macro Packed Refugium

I converted a 125 gallon tank in a refugium/sump. The refugium area is approximately 45 gallons. That area is completely packed with Grape Caulerpa and Feather Caulerpa. When I say packed. I mean like a mat. What should I do with it. Let it continue to pack it in there or thin it out?
