Are you using a tripod and/or a timer or remote? Also, be sure your pumps are off as that can cause some blurriness. Are you able to zoom in on some of those sweet lookin chalices? :)

i didn't cut the flow off or use a tripod. hence the bluriness. i'm shooting on an "advanced auto" mode. Glass wasnt as clean as it could be either. I just rented the lens. 30 bucks a week was better than a grand! haha. a fellow reefer rented it after me so maybe he'll bring it over tmrw for more pics.

Good start but you MUST use a tripod especially for macro shots. You also need to slow all the flow down in the tank.

The colors are really great. but when using macro lens, always shoot in manuel focus mode, and use the lcd screen to zoom in to make sure its clear. Especially using that sigma 150mm. auto focus wont work, maybe a lucky shot now and then.

You can shoot without a tripod, however I wouldn't recommend any auto modes... Shoot in manual or aperture priority with the following settings: f2.8-f5.6 max. ISO 800-1200, and your exposure value should be between 0 and -1.

Use a wide stance, and hold the camera and the end of the lens. Anything you can brace yourself against will help.

Try to shoot corals that are perpendicular to the camera... shooting top down works very well for this reason. Your focal plane at this f stop without a tripod is going to be very narrow.

Good luck!

Hey man, that's a good idea renting a macro lens. Not sure where I can rent one here in SF

call around to your camera stores. there are a couple in knox and they do renting. i'm sure a larger city like that has to have one. thanks for all the advice guys. i'm going to get with a fellow reefer who has the lens this week and see if i can get some better shots using what you all have told me.

You don't have to use a tripod for macro depending on the settings you use. I have a canon 600d with a canon 100mm macro & if I use iso400 with a high shutter speed and an f number between 6-9 I get great pics :) tripods will help for longer shots imo

Turning the flow off will help alot too & also if you decide to take pics under actinics then you will need to white balance the settings to show the correct colours.

A tripod is definitely a must if you want to shoot GOOD macro shots…… there's no way around it not at all... Just like everybody else says make sure you do everything in manual and shoot in raw so you can make adjustments later... The main things you need to shoot good macro shots are a tripod...clean your glass...Coral needs to be in the right position to get close enough to be able to get a good macro...I always like to add carbon the night before I'm going to take pictures because it makes my water nice and clear(That is one of my secret tips).. Something good to take macro shots of... And last but not least a case of good beer! And also another thing is key ...you should not use your finger to snap a shot….Try to use a controller or put your settings so we count down from two seconds... Any movement of the camera is going to throw off the lens and will cause things to be blurry.. And learn how to play with your f-stop.. I might be leaving out a few things but that's the basics! Oh yeah did I mention a good case of beer!

Man thats a lot that goes into taking pics, with all the different lenses and options it seems like taking pictures is another hobby in itself!

Borrowlenses.com is where i rented mine from. Was $100 +/- for 2 weeks, insured and return shipping included.

Great first set of pics. Notice how you take 10 to get 1 u like.. Started this hobby, not knowing i'd have to learn another that like the first isn't so cheap..Lol. Practice my friend.

nice dude. they came out great, you're right it really pops when you cut the halides off. throwing off too much light and over exposing everything. thanks for coming by.
