I have sea lettuce and chaeto growing in my refugium and after 4 months it seems to be building up a lot of debris and I was wondering if I should be stirring it up with my hand to free the debris or if this is part of the process the algae is doing well?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the debris on the macro or just on the bottom of the fuge? When I do my water changes I just siphon the detritus on the bottom of the fuge

Chaeto needs a good flow thru it. My grows like crazy but always has a good strong flow but it's in the sump and not in a low flow stagnic fuge

I was worried about that also when I started using chaeto Between using chaeto skimmer and vodka dosing my levels are really good now. I just clean the sump out maybe every few months. I think between all the pods that build up in the refugium and bacteria that build up it seems to not be as much of a problem at least in my case
