I am aware of the many drawbacks of carbon dosing, but are there any for macroalgae other than the light energy required to light the algae with and the real estate required to grow it in.

look into Triton
Not trying to sell anything but gives good insight of proper macro requirements

Drawbacks can include having it run wild in the main tank (often with Caulerpa), potential release of organics that might irritate other organisms, and often not able to drop nutrients as low as many folks might want.

You may also need some special dosing, like iron.

Thanks Randy!

I am thinking of going with chaetomorpha. All things considering those drawbacks are far less than carbon dosing.
