They've been like this for about a week. I have had zoas/palys not open for a few days at a time, but now for a whole week. And also the puffing of the skirt is suspicious to me. Any thoughts? thanks, dave

I keep my magicians under a rock with low light and they seem to be doing just fine. Try to put them in some shade

you could try a iodine dip to see if that helps them open some times they will get a infection don't know if that is the right word for it. but i have had zoa's do that for weeks at a time i do a iodine dip for about 1/2 hour and put them back in the tank and with in a few days they start opening hope this helps.
good luck

thanks zona, i will try that, i have moved them, as you can see in the picture, to more light and more flow hoping to snap them out of it. If that doesn't help in a couple days, i will dip them for sure....

almost forgot about this thread. Yeah, they didn't make it. Not sure why as everything else in my tank is cranking. Oh well, guys thank you for all the help...

I think it tends to be lighting with magicians. I know many people who have had issues keeping them. I have them in an extremely low flow, low light area of my tank and they are flourishing.

I'll have to tryt hat. I have about 12 polyps but they rarely open and they are loosing there sparkly centers. Thanks for the tip.

Magicians are sensitive to alkalinity changes and like high light/flow - this is just my personal experience.

I had them mid tank with mid flow and they were fine, then one day they just closed up like my pic above, with the stalks all bulging. I moved them to low light low flow for a bit with no change, then moved them to high light high flow, no change. Then i tried the iodine dip and they were gone/melted away the next day. When they were in the dip, i accidentally flipped the frag over one kind of popped like a zit and brown stuff came out of it. I popped the other ones, too. I put them back in the tank and next day they were gone/melted away. Any ideas what that was? I should have taken pics...

My alk and cal are very steady at 9 and 425 thanks to 2 part...

I just received my Magicians today and the shipper said they were closed even before shipping. He sent me an extra frag of different zoa/palys just in case these don't make it. Hoping for the best. I placed them under T5's. They were originally under MH's and seemed to be doing fine according to the orig owner until recently.

You should look out for starfish in your tank.. they seem to eat the expensive ones. They ate my boys mauls and some of my other nice ones.

i suspect bacterial infection. i try to use vit. c on a regular basis to boost imune system. doesn't seem to do much after they are already sick though. when i notice polyps starting to close i try to cut off the infected ones and dip the ones that dont look as bad in iodine then fresh ro water. i have had some success at this lately

i have magicians for a long time...i never moved them..they are just in the bottom of my tank 150w mh..my tank is 18 high...
first pic is when i had it in my 55gal old tank..low flow
2nd pic is when i move them in my new shallow tank 15 high,i have 250w mh..low flow
never have issue with them,,they dont like to get move a lot...and sometimes they shed and look slimy on the stalks otherwise they are doing good in my tank...
they dont like to be fragged either..i tried on my other mini colony and the rest just closed up and never open at all...

the pics are my current magicians now...

ill say dip your frag and just hope for the best

Mine do best in high light and high flow. I must have a wierd morph or something. They will only grow in my frag tank. I tried moving them to my display and tried all different spots but they never once opened. I tried for about 8 days they were closed the whole time. So at the end of day 8 i removed them and just tossed them into my frag tank, which is not connected to my display, without acclimating or anything. 30min later they were all open like nothing ever happened. So there they stay.

Me? Thats my most current, i guess it is from August huh lol. I can snap you one tonight though ;)

Just an update on my frag of 4 polyps. 2 have opened so far after 2 days. I must say they are great looking. The colors are very bright but at the same time soft. I hope the other 2 open.
