Magma wrasse and cherry wrasse, same thing?

Hey wrasse experts, are the cherry wrasse and the Magma wrasse the same thing?

Hmmm...Im no expert, but I think they are just based on how I've seen them labeled for sale. Again, no expert though.

It's a new species of wrasse that hasn't been named yet, to my knowledge. Cherry and Magma are both common names.

Yes, both are common names for the same fish, an as of yet, but soon to be described, Cirrhilabrus species.

Yeah, I've seen mention of a new wrasse species being discovered but the magma and the Cherry wrasse look almost exactly the same to me. even some vendors are using the name interchangeably so I just wanted to ask. Thank you for everyone's input so far.

I'm wondering the same thing. They kinda look similar to female flames.

Yeah, they seem to be very similarly shaped to the flame wrasses (jordani). I had a female flame and the main difference to me is more pronounced fin size on the back and bottom of the fish and the yellow mark near the base of the tail. Plus, it seems the red is a bit brighter if that makes any sense.

There's a lot more to fish pricing than just appearance and supply/demand.

And yes - there will be a paper published soon on the species which will give it a real latin name.

I'm not really sure at what depth they are being collected, but depth and the remoteness of a collection point can drive price more than anything. I suspect it's a bit of both if not more of the latter with this species.

When you look side by side, there are definately some differences between the two physically. But I would have to agree that the two would most likely not get along.
