So wasn’t paying attention the last time I bought salt and bought reef salt for a tank currently with no corals. I’ve done three water changes with it and fish, inverts, etc are all fine but my magnesium is pretty high, between 1600-1650. I was actually planning on buying 1-2 corals very soon since I have a decent amount of fish in the tank now, my question is, should I do another water change with regular salt to lower my magnesium before buying corals or will corals be ok with levels this high starting off.

Hi there! What is your current calcium level? Mg is high but nothing to worry about. Corals just need consistent and stable water conditions. Let it come down naturally with RODI replacement and steady water changes. I would test your water parameters for CA,MG, and ALK for the next week, same time everyday to see your tanks consumption. Then you can gage if you need to dose your tank.

I have tested last two days. Calcium 470-480
dKh was between 8.3-8.5 both days. I wouldn’t assume much consumption would take place since no corals are actually in the tank yet. That was my really my main question, if the corals would be ok with being subjected to that high of calcium from the start or would they be better to start off around 1300 like normal

I keep my Mg at 1500 always and Ca at 500. My corals flourish. You're good just keep an eye on consumption once corals are added to your system and keep it consistent
