Tank has been up and running for almost 2 years now. Everything seems to be good at the moment. There is some hair algae but nothing seems the be affected by it. My question is, should I raise the magnesium level in the tank? Coralline algae has definitely slowed down. Tanks numbers are below. I am also dosing Aquaforest Component 123 and numbers don’t fluctuate much.
Thanks
Jon

alk 9.6 ppm
Cal 439
Mag 1229
Ph 8.04
Nitrate 10
Phosphate 0 (with Hanna phosphate checker)

I like to keep Mag above 1300. There are probably a lot of components to why it's good to have higher mag.
But LPS generally do better when Mag is above 1280.
Mag also helps keep Calcium and Alk from binding and more stable.
I think raising it over time will help.
I like to keep it at 1325 ish

I would get an Urchin for hair algae.
Variegated or Tuxedos work great

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was thinking but wanted another opinion. I will go slow with increasing the magnesium level and I did get 2 urchins. They are definitely lawn mowers.

People used to anecdotally report that higher Mg levels kept hair algae at bay, but it was actually an impurity in a certain Mg supplement that was the cause, if I remember correctly.

You could bump up Mg a little, although you're pretty close to natural seawater. I don't think it will have any impact on the hair algae.
