So I just started dosing my tank about a week ago. This evening I realized that through my own inattention I’ve been dosing my tank daily with magnesium instead of alkalinity. I only finally noticed because my alkalinity was continuing to drop at the same rate daily despite dosing.

How big of a screw up is this? I am well over 1800ppm at this point, what do I do? I don’t have any salt on hand that doesn’t contain mg.

It might kill snails or make them lethargic but it shouldnt cause any major issues. I have had my tanks mg that high a couple of times for treating bryopsis.

I would.

It will drop through consumption or water changes.

Algae, some snails even possibly pods will be affected as well as xenia if you have some. Water change will reduce it very little. Discontinue dosing and monitor every other day via water testing

+1. Conduct 30% water change and allow the MG levels to naturally decline.
