I've been using AF comp 1 2 3 and been keeping really stable parameters. I recently have seen a rise in Mag. My params are currently 7.5dkh, 430 Calcium and 1700ppm Mag. Prior to the rise my mag was pretty stable at 1380 ppm. Should I temporarily stop the 1 2 3 and just dose KH plus and CA plus or 2 part until my mag drops? I did just open a new box of Reef Salt and stirred the bag like always. I'm going to mix a fresh batch and test. Thanks in advance.

I did verify the High Mag with 2 separate test kits. Red Sea and AF mag test.

What is your Mg level in fresh salt water?

I'm mixing up a batch right now. I suspect a bad batch. I just had opened a new box a few weeks back and failed to test the box of salt. I guess I got comfortable as AF claims to ICP test all the batches of salt.

Check out the thread I started a few days ago:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/af-reef-salt-mg-reading-1600-ppm.350593/

I've confirmed that three of my AF Reef Salt buckets are showing 1680ppm of magnesium with a fresh batch of water, from three different Reef Salt buckets. These buckets were all purchased months apart.

I used both Red Sea and Salifert magnesium test kits. The salifert never changed color, as it can only detect up to 1500ppm. The Red Sea consistently shows me using 0.83 to 0.85ml of the titration liquid.

I've heard from others who've had the same issue with the reef salt magnesium.

I've been only dosing Components 1+ and 2+. I'm considering mixing in Reef Mineral Salt into my 1+ to keep that part up in the meantime.

Thanks for this. I just checked out your thread. I'm mixing a fresh batch right now and once it reaches temp, I will post results. My Mag has been pretty stable but since i've opened this last 25kg box of Reef Salt my Mag has been high. I'm using the Red sea and Aquaforest Mag test which is similar to Salifert test.

Just tested a fresh batch of my Aquaforest reef salt and the freshly mixed batch came up to 1470 ppm

1470 is not a bad thing, have you checked the system mid week after a water change?

Hey jsker. My original post was my Mag has taken a sudden rise up to 1700ppm. I suspected the salt so I mixed up a fresh batch to test. Since the freshly mixed salt came out to 1470 I calibrated my dosing pump and will let the Mag fall over time. Not sure why the tank became off balance as I was locked in for several months. Since I'm using the Aquaforest "balling" I'm still not sure if I should leave out the 3rd component and just dose component 1 and 2 OR just use regular 2 part until the tank is in balance again.

What uppppp:D
I kind of had the same thing happen but with my alk. It was 7.7 ish for about a month which is low since I keep my alk around 8.5 I was dosing extra alk during water changes using the proper dosage. all the sudden the alk was at 10.1. For the past two weeks, I backed off a bit on dosing and the alk is falling back into place. In the meantime my Ca, Mg jumped . I did not change the Ca, and Mg and they are also falling back in line.:)

Such a great group. So much support. After testing my salt mix which came back normal and speaking with Michael Schrader, I'm sure it was a mixing error on my part. I mix my own comp 1 2 3 and this last batch was my first batch using the new recipe. Out of habit or lack of attention, I bet I added Mag to both comp 1 and 3. My notes were not very clear. Happy Reefing everyone and Thanks again for your input and advice.
