magnets/metal in upflow algae scrubbers??

Might seem like a dumb question but I thought the general consensus was absolutely no metal in any salt water display or sump yet I see many upflow algae scrubbers using magnets to hold the units in place.

Any members have opinions on these setups??

We use magnets all of the time. We use them to hold powerheads to the side of the tank. We use them for probe holders, frag racks, and clip feeders. The rotors of our return pumps and powerheads are magnets.

Most magnets are coated with plastic (or other inert material) so the metals themselves do not interact with the water. Also, not all metals are created equal. Iron isn't too harmful in a reef tank compared to something like copper where trace amounts can cause issues.
