Magnifinca and Carpet Anemone

-Three posts in a day!- What makes a magnifinca anemone so hard to keep as I want one for my 40 and for my ocellaris pair. They are beautiful anemones and I also like the carpet anemones, would they eat a coral beauty angel and any inverts?

Some of the more tenured reefers will weigh in with actual experience I’m sure, but as a newbie who has recently set up a 105g DT, I can tell you that I very much wanted a carpet anemone and after a ton of research and several discussions with my LFS (that is excellent) I’ve concluded they’re just too sticky and the non-clowns are at risk at all times. And one false move when the lights come on, feeding time, when someone approaches the tank, etc. and its’s all she wrote.

A 40G tank is WAYY too small for a magnifica or carpet. Both those can easily get to 24” or larger.....

youd be better off getting a couple of BTA nems for that size tank

I’ve kept plenty of magnificas in a 40 gallon tank it depends on the size anemone you buy yes it will eventually out grow your tank, but then it’s time you sell it or upgrade to a bigger tank. Magnificas are hard because usually 8 out of 10 times they need some sort of medical treatment or isolation/quarantine before entering a tank so if your not accustomed to doing this it can be a pain. worst case is having to set up a hospital tank and doing cipro treatments and water changes every day until the anemone is better and then quarantine until the anemone seems well enough for the display

Yes

I see lots of sites and articles saying the minimum tank size for a magnifinca is 20 Gal because they get like 1 foot in our aquariums

Yup. I have 6 carpets in my anemone and I can tell you that I've had fish mysteriously disappear so I keep it with clowns only.

I've had one too many magnifica take a walk into a powerhead in the middle of the night. In the morning I had a cloudy tank with many dead fish. The problem is that when an anemone gets shredded, aside from directly polluting the water, they always shoot tentacles with nematocysts all over the tank.

That said, I think I'll always have an anemone in my DT.

Maybe cover the powerhead? Anemones are awesome inverts though and even better, no trace element dosing for them

The newer covers -- such as the NemProtect -- that leaves a space between the cover and the powerhead itself are much better than previous covers, but it's not a 100% guarantee.

This magnifica just got a buzz cut from a MP40 that's covered with a eBay generic version of the NemProtect:

It might be hard to see, but the tentacles on the right side are a lot shorter than those on the left side. Fortunately it didn't kill my purple tang.
