maintaining 80g without sump

No I would put a HOB skimmer, the seapora, on it and I have a media reactor + UV sterilizer.
I currently just have a tank ready to set up and max amount of rock that can fit, since that seems to be the best filtration iirc?

Many aquarists add a doser, automatic water replacement, reactors, etc to their aquarium over time. That is why the aquarium stand cabinet looks like an oil refinery if you catch the bug, you will too, but your refinery will be in plain view.

I ran a 90 gallon LPS reef for about a decade without a sump. Just live rock (back when you could still get real Fiji live rock), sand, 3 powerheads, heater, hang on back skimmer.

Sumps are nice for hiding equipment, increasing water volume, keeping the display water level constant, dosing, ATO, etc.

I came across this one the other day and was surprised he runs no sump. Especially with the fish he got and small in tank skimmer.
