Well, if you’ve seen some of my past posts you’ll have noticed the battle between me and my ultra invasive Pandora zoas. I finally had enough and decided to clear cut through them. I had been holding off due to my fear of getting sick off palytoxin but I got a hold of some shoulder length gloves from the internet and went to town. Here’s a couple of before pics.
Yes, it’s a 26 inch deep tank. I had to pull the middle rock out completely, disrupting the entire rock structure in the process. I then proceeded to manually remove every polyp. Among the surprises was that my bubble coral had encrusted on said rock. I also broke off several heads off my frogspawn and hammer euphyllias. Good news is that I was successful in removing 98% of the zoas and got some nice credit for the frags. The big rock on the right was another story. The SPS have cemented the rock structure and it is impossible to pull that rock out without major destruction. So I had to do it from the top, polyp by polyp until I was satisfied. I think I got about 90% of the mass. There was about 2 lbs of polyps on that rock! But I got it done. Here it is now.
I chose to do it this way in order to avoid disrupting my parameters and I was successful. Everything is in excellent shape. So from now on I am going to make a targeted effort to pick out any remaining polyps and tissue daily for the next couple of weeks and never EVER allow a coral to grow out of control again. It got this way through my wariness of sticking my hands in the tank and a little bit of laziness, ok, a lot. Hope this helps anyone in the same situation. Just suck it up and manually remove them!
