good afternoon! I was messing around w/ my lights today as I've always followed the suggestion of low green and red, but have not found a happy medium between fish and coral coloration. So I adjusted my Hydra 26 reds up to equal my blue settings (Leaving green low) and WOW did my Fairy and Mystery Wrasse look instantly like new fish! And it had very negligible effect on visuals in other colors of corals. My tomini tang fins popped, and some deep red mushrooms. my evening effect when whites are typically off, the wrasse all but disappear into the blue light. keeping the reds equal to blues with whites off, they look great now too!

There are certainly debates to be had on red lighting in reefing, I am just sharing my experience with my red lights today, as it's something I'd never really considered before.

Good point and definitely worth using at least occasionally as an option! I encourage you to also consider the potential impact on algae growth with red light.

absolutely! i've been researching the RGB lighting method and there are camps on both sides, some claiming that the algae/red light correlation is myth. i'm sure plenty of people have anecdotal evidence both ways. way of the world.

it's great for photographing, too!

I was curious about how the camera would pick up the red light for images when I was thinking about your previous post (cameras don't always capture what our eyes do) so that is a good point! Refugium lights and hydroponic grow lights place an emphasis on red lights for growth so I'm not sure that I understand the idea of algae/red light correlation as a myth. All good thoughts worth exploring!

I love my blue light but sometimes it doesn’t do our fish justice. Similar question as @Peace River how long have you run the red and have you seen a boost in algae growth since the adjustment?
