Making a branch rock

So I would like to add a branch like coral rock but a certain shape to fit my already established reef. Saw something were some one took pvc pipe and used it as a structure for it then used mortar to layer on top of pvc. To create the branch rock they wanted..... does this work any one with experience doing this.... also what kind of mortar should I use ?

Honestly it feel it depends how much space you have in your current tank or how old. When I added branch to my existing reef I just bought tonga rock by real reef, while it was expensive it goes along way and way very easy to add to an existing reef tank
