I want to make a frag tank out of what I got. Will it work and what are your suggestions.
55 gallon tank and stand
Filled with coral pro salt mix water.
Partial water from water change on big tank
2 inches of Carib sea black sand agri alive in tank
Tank has been running for months in garage with no heater in it
Previously sat with water and sand in it for a year not running but covered
Penguin 500 hang on filter running for months with coalbolt 1200 circulation pump running in it
I have a coral life 48" light fixture with two actinic bulbs and two 10k and moon lights, not sure if moon lights matter.
I have an old wet dry bio all sump I can use rated for over 100 gallons
I have a hydor 450 pump I can use
I have a 4' counter current skimmer I can use.
Going to buy some plastic grate to put frags on.
Okay so what should I use or change.

I can add some uv LEDs or led light strips to the light if I have to.

I want to frag LPS mainly but what would I need to do SPS:hail:

You off to a nice start! For an sps frag tank I would get rid of the sand and start with clean saltwater and lots of flow. If you want to keep the sand I would strongly recommend a sump/fuge for this project. It might be a bit tricky to keep both but you could do a higher area for the sps and keep the lps towards the bottom and have all of the flow towards the top of the tank so your lps dont get ripped apart. Lighting might be ok if you keep the sps super high up and I would put new bulbs in the fixture. I know im forgetting something but hopefully others will chime in as well.
Good luck!

so if i understand correctly it sat with stagnant saltwater for a period of time?

if so start completely over especially if you think youre gonna put sps in there

I clean all the sand out real good and drained all the water out did a couple changes in water. I do plan on dumping all the water and starting fresh with new water should I keep the carib sea sand in there or take it out.

I have made up my mind I'm not doins SPS only zoas and palys

i would just do barebottom, thats what i have done with my frag tank. its easier to keep the water clean as you can suck out any detritus you see that hasnt been filtered out

okay what to do with the carib sea. anyone ?
Should I use the bioball sump or use it with rock in it or not use at all.
I can just do water changes and use hang on filter. yes / no

for lps and z/p dont go bare bottom or use remote sandbed. and dont use black sand (its metal) ditch the hang on filter and the bio-balls....
other than that dosnt sound like a bad start add a couple wp25 for flow and your good

your saying that the carib sea black has metal in it. Should I use the sump or just tank alone.

Here is a picture of the tank I plan to use
