Making a naturalistic style reef tank

I’m not really sure what you would call it so I’m just gonna call it a naturalistic style aquarium. For my divers out there, when diving you see a lot of the same corals in one area. So has anyone tried to replicate that in their Reef tank? What I mean is has anyone taken maybe just a few different types of corals and just spread them through the tank so there is less variety and this way it looks more like a actual reef?
 
I know some people will set up their tanks to be specific to a certain region but I haven't seen what you described. Sounds interesting though. I live in Washington state and have plans to eventually do a Coldwater tide pool replica tank which would be kinda like you described but with lots of anemones
