Anybody got a good receipe for making fishfood to condition broadstock? I had tried a long time ago, but it didnt turn out very good, because either i had a liquid paste, or too big of chunks.

Done here in louisiana we have a wide variety of fresh seafood so i figure it might be cheaper than rods, or PE mysis.

Further more I should note, I'm looking to make this food for a variety of fish, banggai cardinals, clownfish, and two tangs. I've saw a recipe in the complete illustration for breeders book, but as I stated before, when I tried this in the past I has a few issues, the main one was getting the food to the right size, without make a seafood smoothie.

I was thinking something like this:
1pt- fresh gulf shrimp
1pt- fresh fish ( of some kind)
1pt- fish eggs
1pt-clams, or mussels of some kind
Selcon vitamin
Sea weed
Somekind of commercial fish foods

Now should I,
chop it up fresh by hand
Freeze it then blend it using a blender
Or freeze it and try to grate it with a cheese grater?

Or is this just more trouble than its worth?

You have to use a food processor, using a blender will make the food too irregular in size. I use all what you have listed plus squid and krill. My only issue is most commercial fish have phosphates added to maintain "fresh color". If you can get fish directly from the docks the phosphate is not an issue.

Okay thanks...

Do you use clear unflavored gelitin in your mix or no?

Here is a good link to make some homemade food. Good Luck!!

Thanks for that link.

In the book " The Complete Illustrated Breeder's Guide to Marine Aquarium Fishes", the authur gives a recipe that involves gelatin. Im wondering whats the reason for the gelatin, is it strictly used to preserve or is it used to help the food stay suspended in the water longer?

No, just RODI.

Thanks, i made a small batch (sandwich size bag) of fresh jumbo gulf shrimp,Cyclop-eeze® FreezerBar, silversides, and selco*/selcon* vitamin. I would've added some different items to the mix but i was trying to really limit the cost of the mix since i was unsure how it would turn out.

First problem i noticed, was that food, especially the shrimp seems to stick together, like glue, forming big chunks that sunk pretty quickly. The other concern i have is weather or not this type of food will add heavily to the phosphate levels in my tank.

I do think home made food does add a significant amount of phosphates but it is worth the trouble. I fed my tank PE Mysis last night and it was funny watching my fish spit the mysis back out.

While I am feeding the homemade food, I do rotate between homemade, PE mysis, pellets, and a wide variety of other frozen foods, just to mix it up.
