I just received 300 pounds of old use rock, looks real bad.
how would i wash it and brighten it up (still wet)

if it's still wet and hasn't completely died off then it's live rock, you don't want it to look "new"

where did you get the rock? pics?

somebody was tearing down their tank, so worked out a deal for the rock (almost stole them)
do not know how to post pics yet. I think just to safe i should recure them?

Letting it cycle for a while wouldn't be a bad idea. You can scrub it too. But unless you specifically want dry dead rock I wouldn't do much more. What are you doing with this rock? Adding to an existing system or starting a new tank?

Yeah, it's just like starting with dry rock. There are advantages to both. With dry rock you won't have unwanted hitchhikers, with live rock you will have increased biodiversity and imo a more natural tank. Dry will become live after a while, but if you go that route you will need to dry and clean the rock properly.

If it were me I would use it as-is (maybe a little scrubbing to clean it up) unless there are major issues with algae or pest anemones..

Does it have a lot of algae on it?

How long till you're ready for the rock? I'm not a big fan of inheriting someone elses problems. I'd "cook" it myself. I've had pretty good success with this in the past.

Thanks for your reply, I have a few back, but i think i have to agree with you on this on. Just
means i will have to do a full cycle. Getting pretty itchy to get started on this project
