Male blue throat lost color

I got this fish maybe 6 months ago probably under 3". It had yellow and lost it all. There's no way it turned female, is there? I was attracted to the light grayish fish with strong yellow. If it turned female, Id simply buy another male. It still has a blue throat though.

I had a pair for some time and noticed that they could turn the yellow on and off. I never knew if it was their mood, water quality or what. My starry blenny would do the same thing with his "stars."

I fell in love with the fish in the pic below. I ordered one to be as small as possible and it had some color when I got it. I Know there's some difference between Hawaii and indo, but I'm not sure how much that matters.
