im pretty sure i already know the answer but i picked up this lyretail anthia today and i want to be sure its female video below also would it be better to get another female or get a male to go along with him or her? cause i want another thanks

female

i was told when the streamer starts developing is when they start turning male. i have had a single one for over a year and she got a bit of a streamer, but stayed female. males are much more red or pinkish depending on where it was collected. i really like that fish, good luck with yours!

from what i can gather about groups, you'd be better off getting like 4 more at least so aggression can be spread around rather than the male beating up on just one. lyretails are pretty rough on each other

@Angel_Anthias lover might know better than me when it comes to groups of lyretails

The larger the group is generally better, to disperse agression as mattzang said, but sometimes its all down to particular individuals you have as to how agressive theyll be, so its hard to give a definitive answer. Getting more females is best as yours may be in the transition to male already and adding a male to that could cause issues, unless your fairly certain there is no signs of transition. Hope it goes well whatever you chose

how long did it take yours to eat? just wondering what i should expect the lfs i got her from said she was in their system for a little over a month and was eating but she didn't eat this morning when i fed ill give it a few days

Ours ate within an hour but started aggressively feeding that evening at the tanks normal dinner time.

That is definitely a female, and I see no signs of changing yet. I think you can add either a M or F at this stage. In my experience, if given plenty of room, multiples are fine together. I have seven in all, 2 of which are changing to male (another sign: elongated dorsal spine). They sometimes push each other around, but the tank is 6 feet long so plenty of room.

Female.
I also have a single female as I liked the females looks than a Male. If you get a anotehr female one will turn to a male and there is the chance that he might haras the other to death. Better off going for 2-3 more if you have a large enough system or stick with the one.

Mine started to eat within fw hours. It might be a bit diffrent depending on tnak condition. If the tank is the large one in your build thread go with atleast 2-3 more atleast than just 1 male.

Lyretails are harder to keep in groups than most other anthias except bartletts which almost always end in one..
They can be very aggressive toward each other killing the smallest female over time and then so on.

If keeping a pair of two females one will change male.

A single will eventually turn male. Male lyretails can sometimes be on the aggressive side.

A larger group requires a pretty big tank..

Lyretails are pretty hardy but there are easier anthias if you want to keep groups.
I have good luck actually mixing different anthias.

thanks everyone for all the tips and advice im happy to say she ate really well when i just fed the tank i fed mysis shrimp she ate so much and shes so fast that i had to feed a little more to make sure my other fish got enough lol now im wondering if she will eat the pellets and flake that i feed because i alternate what i feed

Anthias are active and will sit in the flow all day long looking for food.

i never got mine to eat anything but frozen and a few flakes, but i also haven't really tried. i like to feed high end frozen food.

that said, the lyretails are supposedly pretty easy to get to eat other stuff. one tactic i recall was don't feed for a day, then the next day feed pellets or flakes.

and i always fed with flow on, i figure it's better for the fish to get their chase on

i woke up this morning to feed and i noticed its tail fin was a little bit damaged it looks to me probably cause she dives into the rockwork so fast if startled anything i need to worry about?

You don't have to worry about that. But seems like she is ruling the tank. Becasue so seems like she is starting to turn towards a male. Maybe the transition won;t happen completely but Already half way there.

Will maybe half transition to male.
Do not get anotehr male for any reason !
