I got this Malu anemone from AquaSD approximately 2 weeks ago. Is it normal for it to stay wide open all the time? It’s tentacles are less than an inch long at the edges and maybe 1/4” around the mouth. It just looks like a thick hairy mushroom right now. I’ve tried feeding it mysis and only eats what lands directly on the mouth. The tentacles don’t try to guide any food to its mouth. It hasn’t lost any color at all. It’s supposed to be purplish with green tips in color when I bought it but I think AquaSD just oversaturates its pics. I also have a pair of wild caught Onyx clowns which have so far been avoiding the anemone but that’s a totally different issue. Let me know what you guys think. Thank you!

It is a H. malu, ID from the rings on his tentacles. Malu are sand bed anemone, should do well if you get him some sand. Careful about the Zoanthids. Zoa often very agresive and dont often end up in loosing end of any coral war. I think the Zoa maybe bothering your anemone.

Thanks guys,

It still looks the same but had increased in size by at least 50%, but tentacles are still short. Very sticky and now eats any mysis that lands on it. Not too worried about the zoas. The ones near it have all closed up now. If at all, I think the anemone is the one that irritates them.

Wondering how your nem is doing. I've been watching the sales on AquaSD as well waiting for the right one to snag.

P.S. OrioN is right - these are sand dwelling anemones. They like to bury their foot in the sand.

Your malu looked pretty good from the beginning. I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

You don't ever want zoas and anemones to fight with each other. Best to keep them separated at all times.

The Malu is still doing really good and has grown as you can see in the picture. Here’s 2 months of growth. I got an anemone crab as my Onyx won’t go near it. Zoas don’t really close up around it anymore. They probably got used to it.

Color is still the same. Greenish on white light and bluish when actinics are on. Not anywhere close to the colors that AquaSD posted. Here’s the posted pic on their site when I bought it.
